Welcome to Ryan and Sky's Blog!

Welcome to our blog. This blog was setup to follow our son's, Ryan, journey to receiving a service dog.

Ryan is 10 years old and has cerebral palsy which makes his leg muscles very tight and difficult to walk. He uses forearm crutches for short distances and an electric wheelchair for longer distances.

Tasks that are easy for a typical child such as opening a door or picking up an item off the floor can be very difficult for Ryan.

We applied for a service dog for Ryan in April 2008. He was partnered with a female black lab named Sky in August of 2011.

Please join us in our journey with Ryan and Sky!

I am now a Grandma?!?!

This weekend was a bit discouraging. I think we were practicing too hard & Sky was in a funk. We got instructions Monday to just play with her and do some simple commands on Monday evening. We made a game for Ryan to see how much he could get her tail to wag and butt to shake. This seemed to be motivating for both of them. Ryan was able to tell what she responded to and enjoyed.

We went to the Harrisburg East Mall today. Ryan was really clicking and treating her for good walking. She walked next to him like a champ! I was so proud of both of them. If she did get too far ahead Ryan was able to correct her and bring her back. On Monday morning I was convinced that they were both not going to pass the test, but they did super today!

They also worked on elevators - we need a bit more practice on that one. And Sky was pushing the handicap door openers for Ryan and doing really well. We ate at the Food Court. One of the tests on the Public Access Test is that the evaluator will push food off the table and Sky needs to "leave it". So we got to practice that, as well! They will also put a plate of food or pile of dog food on the ground and Ryan needs to walk within 4 feet of the food and Sky needs to "leave it". She does really well at that cue.

We went back to the kennel for the afternoon and practiced "crutches" - Sky picking up his crutches. She's having a little difficulty because Ryan uses Neoprene covers on his handles and that is not what she practiced at the kennel. So we are taking a few steps back to shape her to pick them up.

Tomorrow is a trip to the school and also to our home. We have been very fortunate that the school has been very accepting and open to working with us with Sky. Our home is a bit of a disaster, but oh well!

Oh....and Ryan also informed me that I am now a "Grandma" to Sky. Seriously? I don't think so!!

  1. So glad to hear of all the successes and progress! I think you are all doing famously, especially you, Grandma!! Now Don't feel alone--Marne has told me the same thing regarding Cassie. I corrected her immediately as I explained I should be considered her aunt!
