Welcome to Ryan and Sky's Blog!

Welcome to our blog. This blog was setup to follow our son's, Ryan, journey to receiving a service dog.

Ryan is 10 years old and has cerebral palsy which makes his leg muscles very tight and difficult to walk. He uses forearm crutches for short distances and an electric wheelchair for longer distances.

Tasks that are easy for a typical child such as opening a door or picking up an item off the floor can be very difficult for Ryan.

We applied for a service dog for Ryan in April 2008. He was partnered with a female black lab named Sky in August of 2011.

Please join us in our journey with Ryan and Sky!

Sky is Home!!!

Sky relaxing by Ryan's chair while he eats his bedtime snack.

Ryan and Sky walking. Sky is waiting for her treat for doing a great job!

Well, today was the day! Sky came home with Ryan. She did amazingly well meeting our dogs. I think our golden, Kasey, finally met his match. She was pulling some of the same moves he typically uses. We had a blast watching them play outside. Our older dog also liked her, but in small quantities (the same as she likes Kasey!). Brandy had to give her a few warning growls when she overstepped her boundaries.

One of the thing we were concerned about was how Sky was going to listen with our dogs around, but she is doing great. She still keeps her eye on her boy and follows his commands. We had a few times of distraction, but it was pretty darn good all things considering. We are trying to figure out how to balance Sky being on duty and having free time to be a dog.

Ryan was funny because when we got home after awhile he told us he was taking Sky up to his bedroom because he needed "bonding time" with her. They were both lying in his bed. He figured out he should get in first and then let her find a space (she was a bit of a bed hog). It was funny because I can't remember the last time he went upstairs to his room except to go to bed. Apparently, having Sky with him was worth the trip up the steps.

Today went much better with walking with his crutches and with his wheelchair. Ryan is figuring out he needs to just move/drive and she will come along. He's trying to be so considerate and make room for her to walk instead of just doing his thing and letting her come along.

I'm going to try and make some videos of them working together this weekend. It's pretty amazing.

  1. YAY SKY AND RYAN!!!! I sure Sky will fit in fine with your dogs. When Tanner and Cassie start playing, sometimes Sky gets "annoyed" that she is left out and will start barking at them--Just like little kids!

  2. They (Ryan and the dogs) are doing so well with Sky. I don't think Sky will be left out in the playing. She and Kasey are mostly playing and Brandy just watches. Sky does try to engage Brandy and Brandy will do a run after her and then stops. I keep telling Brandy she doesn't have to play with the young whipper snappers if she doesn't want to. Brandy is pushing 8 years old and doesn't have the spunk like she did before. Right now Ryan, Sky, and Kasey are outside playing and Brandy is lying inside on the couch!

We have an above ground pool in our backyard and Sky keeps barking at the the balls and other toys floating in the pool. It's so funny. One of the boys' floating alligators blew out into the yard and she didn't know what to make of it.

We need to figure out a different sleeping arrangement. Sky does well sleeping with Ryan in his bed until Kasey comes over and then she jumps down and wants to explore. I had to keep getting up throughout the night to have her go back in bed with Ryan. I think a baby gate in front of the door will be in order tonight. Usually our dogs sleep in our bedroom and doesn't get up at night. I think it is the novelty of having a new dog in the house.

Ryan is outside trying to video tape Sky. Oh, my!

He has been calling her "Sky puppy" to call her inside because that is what you used to do. :-)

Time to get ready for Team Training. Have a good day.

  3. It sounds as though things are going really well! I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that Sky and Ryan are both adjusting so nicely. Sky was always a favorite of mine and the Stovers did such a wonderful job raising her. I'm so proud of Sky, the Stovers and Ryan!! Thanks so much for keeping us posted.
